The Banana River Sail and Power Squadron, a unit
of the US Power Squadrons is pleased to announce the start of a sailing class.
The course will consist of approximately ten
two-hour sessions held on Wednesdays. The newly revamped SAIL 2009 is a complete
sail course beginning with basic boat designs, rigging and sail processes for
the non-sailor. The course proceeds into the physical aspects of sailing,
sail applications, marlinespike, helmsmanship, handling of more difficult
sailing conditions, navigation rules, and an introduction to heavy weather
sailing. A three-hour on-the-water session on a sailboat is part of the class.
A basic knowledge of physics, geometry and
algebra is required for some of the lessons dealing with the theory of sailing,
hull stability and wind forces. Recommended minimum age is 18 years; parents of high school juniors and seniors should evaluate the risk of enrolling
them.
The classes will start on April 28, 2010 at
7:00 pm at Keiser
University (NW corner of Babcock and NASA in
Melbourne). Registration deadline is March 14, 2010.
The course will be taught by Harvey Inventasch,
who, with his wife Joy has sailed extensively for nearly 50 years in the
Great Lakes,
Bahamas,
Florida Keys and
Dry Tortugas and in the
Pacific Northwest. They own a
Hunter 386 sloop.
The fee for the SAIL course is $175.00 – a
student manual is furnished – or $55.00 for USPS/Banana River SPS and US Coast
Guard Auxiliary members.
USPS membership is $98.20, which includes a
one-time Entrance fee of $25.00 for a saving of $21.80.
The Family membership is $135.00, which also
includes a one-time Entrance fee of $25.00.
